Bio Society F.A.Q
What is Biology Society?
Biology Society is an 8th period activity at TJHSST dedicated to providing a
sympathetic and active environment for students to learn about biology. Biology Society,
or "BioSoc", meets every Wednesday, B-block, in room 123.
What activities do meetings include?
BioSoc offers a spectrum
of activities. Meetings often feature an article that is read and discussed. Hot topics in
biology often set the stage and lead to intensive inquiry and debates. At least once a
month is a presentation on new scientific discoveries and developments in research. In the
past, BioSociety has welcomed distinquished members of the scientific community, notably
in co-sponsored double-block meetings. Ordinary reunions offer interactive
activities such as BioJoepardy, the Evolution Game, and every meeting inevitably involves
food!
How do I become a member?
By becoming a member of
Bio Society, you not only help our club fund field trips, presentations, food, etc., but
you also have priority on field trip sign-ups, may attend as many meetings as you wish,
and can elect BioSoc officers and run for office. Becoming a member takes no time! Obtain
a sign-up sheet from a BioSociety officer, fill it out, and
attach $5 before turning it in. You can most likely find officers in room 123, either at
lunch or assuredly during a meeting, Wednesday, B-Block.
What leadership opportunities are there in
BioSoc?
Every June, BioSociety
members elect five to six officers who will represent them the following year. Offices
organize meetings, maintain contact with club members, manage the BioSoc website, take
minutes at officer meetings, compile a scrapbook...there's lots of fun and work at hand!
Throughout the year, members have many opportunities to participate in leadership, notably
if they formulate plans for field trips or activities. Additional biology-related events
are co-organized by officers and members and planned (such as the spring Science Day,
planned beginning in December--for more information, contact Clare Murphy).
Don't Miss Out!
We're all human, and we can't always make meetings every time (although that's recommended, and it's undoutedly the best use of your time!). If your schedule is cramped, be sure to leave some space for the best of the best! Don't miss out on these Biology Society and science-related events:
March 2004 - Science Day. Hosted at
TJHSST, a morning and afternoon-full of science-related activities for girls to promote
women's involvement in science. Contact Clare Murphy for more
information.
June 2004 - J-Day. Biology Society, like every year,
will be holding a stand at J-Day, TJHSST's end-of-the-year "field day"! Be sure
to drop by the BioSoc stand for contests and great food! Past highlights include
micropipetting competitions and gummi worm mud cups. Come early, they go fast! Members are
also encouraged to help in running the stand, as this is a major fundraiser for the club.
June 2004 - Officer Elections. Every year, Bio Society
members elect their officers for the following year. Check with one of the current Bio
Society officers to determine the date of the election meeting so you can cast your vote!

September 2004 - Cell Cakes. Celebrating a fresh
schoolyear, BioSociety kicks off with its annual Cell Cake competition! This is one of
the, if not the, most famous BioSociety tradition, and a fantastic bonding
activity. Groups of BioSoc members and newbies collaborate to transform a simple frosting
cake into a candy-loaded "cell"! After judging the best cake, everyone
attacks...!
