  • States
Information for the upcoming Virginia Scholastic Championships has come out. It will be held in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech University on the weekend of March 13 and 14, 2010. Please also note that this year also features a second ever "State Scholastic Blitz Championships" on Friday evening, March 12th, 2009. More information can be found here. As this cannot be stressed enough, last year the TJ Chess Team has won its tenth straight VA State Championship. We can extend this monopoly further. For the players who are new to TJ (mostly underclassmen), it is a great experience to be part of not only a winning team, but a team full of sportsmanship and camaraderie. That sounds cheesy, but trust us, you will remember these big events for years to come. If you are a member of Academic Boosters (http://www.tjhsst.edu/aboosters), when we register you, we will pay for your registration fee! Please tell us ASAP if you are interested in this great tournament (which, incidentally, would cover 2/3 of the points necessary to letter). In addition, we need to arrange room reservations based on how many players will attend.
  • Nationals
From April 3 to 5, 2009 and held in a resort hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, this is the largest tournament in the United States (and probably the world). It's a combination of all the national tournaments - elementary, junior high, and high - into one. This doesn't mean you'll be playing elementary school students, just that you'll all be playing under one roof. The last Supernationals had over 5300 participants. This time around there can only be more. Supernationals happens every four years, so this is literally your only chance to ever play in one if you haven't already. Don't let the magnitude of this tournament scare you! We will have many team members there to support you as well as our incredible sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Loffredo and Mr. Ero. This is truly a team effort, so concentrate more on this unique experience than anything else. We will do everything we can to make you feel welcome if this is your first time being involved with the chess team. Here are a few links just to give you an idea about the tournament. For the hotel: http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylord-opryland/ . By the way, this is the largest non-casino hotel in the world and the largest in the U.S. excluding Las Vegas.
