The Varsity Chess Team is a nationally competitive chess team, and lettering for the Varsity Team is a very commendable acheivement.
As such, to letter, members must accumulate 75 points over the couse of a school year on the following scale:

• Lessons during lunches: 1pt each
• MACL matches*: 15pts each
• State Championships**: 50pts
• National Championships**: 60pts
• Amateur Team East: 50pts**
• Membership in Academic Boosters: 10pts
• Fundraising opportunities: depends on event
• Other factors for people close to 75 points: your tournament performance, how often you come to lunch meetings, and your improvement over the year.

* - the MACL registration tournament and the MACL playoffs each count for a MACL match.
** - if you do exceptionally well compared to what was “expected” based on your skill level, you may be awarded 5 extra points for the event (at the captains' discretion).

In addition to aggregating 75 points, to letter you must exhibit good sportsmanship and conduct at all Chess Team events. In the words of a former captain, "Win with a quiet dignity, draw with a smile, and lose graciously." Finally, the Captains and Coaches have final discretion in giving out letters regardless of point total.
