Our committees and what they do.

The Recycling Committee
The job of the Recycling Committee is to help promote the general process of recycling. We try to promote recycling and make recycling as easy as possible. It is a very straight-forward goal that can have many benefits. Increasing the recycled material means that we reduce landfills and the amount of trash burnt, both of which don't help the environment. Overall, it is our duty to do our part in saving the world, so join up now.

The Global Warming/Energy Committee ("TJSPI")
The Global Warming/Energy Committee of the EIC seeks to promote activism and awareness of some of the most pressing, publicized, and political issues related to environmentalism today. The "umbrella goal" of the committee is to reduce the effects of global warming via different approaches, one of which is to promote the use of renewable energy sources. Therefore, one major goal for the 2008-2009 school year is to install a solar panel system at TJ; this involves fundraising, seeking approval from appropriate administrators, creating publicity, and many other tasks. However, the committee also works on creating other initiatives to reduce global warming, such as pushing for the construction of "green buildings" and convincing school systems to make their school buses more environmentally-friendly. The committee continually adapts to incorporate the ideas of all members, and attempts to include as many members as possible in various areas of the committee.

The Biomonitoring Committee
The BioMonitoring commitee will team up with several agencies to monitor sites such as streams. We will use biological testing and chemical testing to calculate the quality of the environment. Then this information will be sent to the agencies for their use in studies. We will also take trips to the Chesapeake Bay and remove many invasive species from the environment. In the long run, the BioMonitoring commitee is hoping to increase the awareness of those around us about our environment and its health.
