Constitution

Article 1: Name

  • Section 1: This honor society will be known as the TJHSST German Honor Society - Delta Epsilon Phi (ΔΕΦ).

Article 2: Aims

  • Section 1: The aims of the club will be:
    • a) to increase not only our own cultural knowledge of Germany and other German-speaking countries; but the school's in general through various activities.
    • b) to increase the understanding of the importance of the German language in the world.
    • c) to sponsor activities for students who might not necessarily be German Honor Society members.
    • d) to help students of German with their studies.

Article 3: Qualifications and Obligations for Members

  • Section 1: Qualifications of members are as follows:
    • a) A member must maintain a minimum of a 3.5 (on a 4-point scale) in German.
    • b) A member must maintain a minimum grade point average of a 3.0 (on a 4-point scale).
    • c) A member must have completed a minimum of two years of German and currently be enrolled in his/her appropriate level. Students having completed the last possible German level available are exempt from this requirement.
    • d) Students having completed three years of German who are unable to pursure German further due to graduation requirements or scheduling difficulties are exempt from Part(c).
  • Section 2: To be considered a member, a person must have paid his/her dues, if applicable, and been initiated into the Honor Society.
  • Section 3: Initiation procedures for new members are to be determined by the officers and Sponsor at the beginning of each school year.
    2008 Induction process
    • Students wishing to be inducted into GHS will complete an application in the fall and will then be considered preliminary members.
    • Preliminary members must complete three service hours per semester and are subject to the same rules as members (see section 3.5).
    • Inductions will be held in the spring, after which preliminary members will be granted full membership.
  • Section 4: Obligations of members are as follows:
    • a) Attendance is not mandatory, but it is requested of each member to try to attend all meetings. Members should normally miss fewer than three meetings in a school year.
    • b) All members are asked to follow all school rules and any specific rules as requested by the Sponsor while attending a meeting. The officers or Sponsor may ask a student to discontinue attendance if his/her behavior is considered inappropriate.
  • Section 5: Service obligations of members are as follows:
    • a) Established members are to complete four service hours per semester.
    • b) New members are to complete three service hours per semester.
    • c) Service hours can be obtained by attending a GHS sponsored activity, helping to plan a GHS activity, or tutoring another student in German under a qualified teacher's supervision.
    • d) One service hour is awarded for each block of 8th period devoted to a GHS activity.
    • e) The maximum number of hours that can be completed on J-Day is two hours.
    • f) If hour requirements are not met, the remaining hours must be made up double in the following semester.
    • g) If no service hours are accumulated in a semester, the student's membership in GHS will be revoked.

Article 4: Officers

  • Section 1: The officers will be as follows: president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
  • Section 2: Members currently in German that are planning on pursuing German in the following year, provided such a level exists and they have been in the Honor Society a minimum of one year, may run for office.
  • Section 3: The election of officers will take place on the last members' meeting of each school year.
  • Section 4: Officers may resign by giving written notice to the secretary or Sponsor.
  • Section 5: An election may be held whenever an office is declared vacant. An officer who was dismissed due to excessive absence may run for reelection.
  • Section 6: The president may appoint a member to another office and give him/her a title and define his/her duties, if necessary.
  • Section 7: An officer may be impeached by two-thirds popular vote. Any member may create a petition for an officer's impeachment. Two-thirds of the members must sign this petition in order for action to be taken.

Article 5: Meetings

  • Section 1: Members' and officers' meetings will be held on the days agreed upon by the officers and the Sponsor.
  • Section 2: Meeting dates must be arranged before the activity sign-ups.
  • Section 3: Meetings will generally be held on the same day every two weeks.

Article 6: Dues and Expenditures

  • Section 1: The amount of annual dues will be decided upon by the officers at the beginning of each school year, if they believe that it is necessary.
  • Section 2: All expenditures must be approved of by the Sponsor.
  • Section 3: Expenses of over fifty dollars must be approved of by at least fifty percent of the club members present at a members' meeting.

Article 7: Approval and Amendments

  • Section 1: Any member may propose an amendment. To be added to the constitution, two-thirds of the members present at a members' meeting must approve of it.
  • Section 2: All officers and the Sponsor must approve of this constitution in order for it to be valid.
