Election Results

Today in Investment Club we held the officer elections elections. The results are:

President: Sundeep Kutumbaka
Vice President: Philip song
Treasurer: Shreyas Mahapatra
Publicist: George Bocchetti
Boss: Alex Hoffman

The secretary vote was tied between Matt and Manu. Because all of the results were very close (4-5-6-7-7), the officers have decided to have a revote via email. So, you can vote for any of the five people who ran for secretary:

Ashee Jain
Mircea Cernev
Matt Pregozen
Manu Narra
Pavan Naik

Everyone has two votes. You have the option of either giving 2 votes to any one candidate or splitting them up, one vote to each of two candidates (no fractions, please.) Also, only people who attended three times can vote. When you vote, reply with your name so that the officers can verify that you are a valid member. Otherwise, your votes may be nullified.

Candidates: You may send out your speech as a reply to the email from the officers containing this message.

Good luck to all, and may the best man win.

Guest Speaker Update

The specifics for Mr. Hilton's guest presentation have changed. The presentation will be on Wednesday, May 19th, A and B Block in the College and Career Center. The preliminary presentation will be given during Friday, May 14th, B Block in Investment Club.

Guest Speaker: Paul Hilton

Thomas Jefferson Investment club has scheduled a guest speaker to give a presentation on Friday, May 21st, during both A and B blocks. The speaker will be Paul Hilton, the Director of Sustainable Investment Business Strategy at the Calvert Social Investment Foundation. The presentation will be in the Lecture Hall. For more information on Mr. Hilton, see his biography or this recent article.

The TJIC officers will host a special preliminary presentation on Friday, May 14th during B Block. The presentation will give a brief overview of Socially Responsible Investment so that those who attend Mr. Hilton's presentation will have some background knowledge. Club members who wish to ask Mr. Hilton any questions must submit the questions to the TJIC officers in advance. If the officers approve a question, the member who submitted it will receive bonus lettering points.

TJIC Shirt Update

To those of you who have pre-ordered a shirt but have yet to pay: tomorrow is the last day you can make the pre-order payment of $10! If you are one of these people, please bring in the money (cash only). If you don't pay by tomorrow, the price will jump to $14, even if you have pre-ordered. This is because we have to place the order ASAP and any purchases or cancellations after we order are unexpected inconveniences.

If you haven't ordered yet, the price is $14 no matter what. The dealine for pre-order and payment has already been extended several times.

New Stock Game

I have created a new stock game at virtualstockexchange.com. The game ID is TJICSpring10 and the password is moneylove. This is a regular, un-themed game, so there are no extra rules. This is a private game; it is only for TJIC members. For more information, see our Virtual Stock Games page.

Alumni Presentation

During our meeting next week, two past officers, David and Nelson, will be giving a presentation on a company's 10K, which is an annual statement. The 10K is a very complicated document, but it is crucial to advanced analysis of any publicly traded company. The officers will use RockTenn Company's 10K as an example. To prepare, Nelson and David have asked that members interested in getting the most out of their lecture read Part 1 Items 1 and 1a as well as Part 2 Items 6 and 7. Please read these sections--it shouldn't take too long.

In addition, David and Nelson will be staying after school to give a more detailed presentation on Discounted Cash Flow and how to value a company (Warren Buffet does it this way). They will use a powerpoint and an excel spreadsheet that accompany that presentation. Look them over, especially slide 31 of the powerpoint, if you want to get a head start. If you want to attend this after-school meeting, please bring a laptop as we will not have a projector.

As always, bring food for lettering points

National High School Fed Challenge

The National High School Fed Challenge is a great way to show off your knowledge of current economic conditions in a presentation format in which you simulate a federal reserve meeting. The competition for our region is April 12-13th, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. It is quite competitive, so begin planning because you probably will have to work over spring break.

If you are certain that you want to compete, please notify the TJIC officers of your team (between 3-5 members) and the officers will register you. Our sponsor, Mr. Zack will be listed as the "coach" for all teams attending. The officers will also provide your team with more details as the competition date approaches.

For more information see this or this.

Special Presentation: AFCU

The Thomas Jefferson Investment Club (TJIC) will be hosting a guest speaking presentation this Friday March 5th during B-Block. Come learn about the importance of financial literacy in the world today, as presented by Apple Federal Credit Union liaisons Jamie Gatchell and Perinda Lowe. Signup now to enjoy the food and fun at TJIC! All are welcome.

New Stock Game

I have created a new stock game at virtualstockexchange.com. The game ID is TJIC0910Sem2 and the password is moneylove. This is a semester game, not a theme game, so there are no extra rules. Also, this is a public game, so any TJ student may participate. For more information, see our Virtual Stock Games page.

New Stock Game

This is similar to our monthly theme games, but since February is a short month and we have spring break in March, we have decided to lengthen this game so that it lasts until the day before break. The theme for this game is diversification because Mr. Ero stressed the pitfalls of high-risk investment during his presentation. You can't put more than 30% of your equity into one order, and you can't use margin. These are pre-set rules in the VSE game.

Special Presentation: Mr. Ero

Come learn about how statistics can be applied to real-life investment, as presented by Mr. Ero, TJ's AP Statistics teacher. The presentation will be in room 228-230 on January 27 during B-Block. There will be food! Investment club members who attend will receive 2 lettering points.

TradeKing: Refer a Friend

Our brokerage, TradeKing, is running a promotional "Refer A Friend" offer. If someone creates an account worth $1000 or more from our referral, an extra $100 will be added to TJIC's portfolio. We are offering an astounding 7 lettering points to any club member who sets up an account or gets someone to set up an account. The more friends we refer, the more we can earn.

TradeKing is one of the most highly awarded online brokers in the industry, which is why TJIC has decided to use them for the club's trading. They have amazing trader analysis features and tools. Barron's says they are among the "Best for stock and options traders." SmartMoney ranked them #1 for customer service and Kiplinger's says "TradeKing reigns" in customer service, awarding them their highest rating of five stars.

Email us if you are interested in creating an account or have any questions regarding TradeKing. We will send you a referral link if you choose to sign up.

New Stock Game

I have created a new stock game at virtualstockexchange.com. The game ID is TJICJan10 and the password is moneylove(what else?) For more information, see our Virtual Stock Games page.

This is the third of our monthly theme games. The theme for January is Basic Materials because the California Gold rush started in the month of January. You may only buy stocks in the Basic Materials sector. The officers will check the transaction histories of the winners at the end of the game, so don't cheat!

Free Rich Dad Investment Workshop

Rich Dad is holding a free investment workshop at The Westin Hotel Tysons Corner on January 14. All participants receive a flash drive loaded with free access to Rich Dad tools and tips. Several officers are attending. Any club members who attend the workshop on January 14 will receive three lettering points, as long as they meet the officers there for confirmation. For more information or to sign up, visit the workshop web site.

New Stock Game

I have created a new stock game at virtualstockexchange.com. The game ID is TJICDec09 and the password is moneylove(what else?) For more information, see our Virtual Stock Games page.

This is the second of our monthly theme games. The theme for December is long-term investing. Members can make trades for one week after the creation date, until December 11, 2009. After that, members can only place Sell or Buy To Cover orders; they can liquidate their holdings, but can't make any new acquisitions. The officers will check the transaction histories of the winners at the end of the game, so don't cheat!

One Question Grant

During the summer, the TJIC officers filled out the One Questions Grant. We focused on the club's new emphasis on Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). The officers have recently learned that TJIC has successfully received a grant worth $250 from the school. This will provide money for both club activities and investment. For more information, attend the Investment Club meeting during 8th Period B-Block on Friday, November 13, 2009. For more information on SRI, see our SRI tab. A copy of our grant application can be found at that location as well.

TradeKing: Refer a Friend

Our brokerage, TradeKing, is running a promotional "Refer A Friend" offer. If someone creates an account worth $1000 or more from our referral, an extra $50 will be added to TJIC's portfolio. We are offering an astounding 7 lettering points to any club member who sets up an account or gets someone to set up an account. The more friends we refer, the more we can earn. We may even be able to double our portfolio's funds if 10 or more new accounts are set up. If this happens we promise to schedule a trip to see the U.S. Mint and Federal Reserve in Washington D.C. So, take advantage of this great way to really help out the club and get some extra lettering points!

TradeKing is one of the most highly awarded online brokers in the industry, which is why TJIC has decided to use them for the club's trading. They have amazing trader analysis features and tools. New Lettering System

This year, we will be experimenting with a new, competitive lettering system. For more information, see our Lettering tab.

We will let you know whether TJIC recieved the grant as soon as we hear about it.
