What is Socially Responsible Investing?
Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is an investment process that takes into account the social and environmental consequences of investments, both positive and negative, within the context of rigorous financial analysis. SRI encourages investors to pay attention to topics such as environmental issues, human rights policies, community investing, product safety, corporate governance, shareholder advocacy, and ethics. The recent global economic crisis and financial meltdown illustrate both the importance and the lack of SRI. The crisis was caused at least in part by greed at various levels of the economy and the absence of insight into the SRI issues mentioned above. SRI-conscious investors are less surprised than other investors by the market crisis.
SRI and TJIC
As responsible and educated people, we have an obligation to the betterment of society in general. We believe that creating awareness of SRI will give investors the option to build a better tomorrow while earning competitive returns. TJIC officers will arrange and host a few presentations on SRI, which will be open to the TJ community. We are actively seeking guest speaking engagements from the key management of institutions such as the Social Investment Forum, the Center for Responsible Business (research- and practice-based education center at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business), Trillium Asset Management Corporation (pioneer in the social investment industry), Calvert Investments (focused on sustainable and responsible investing), and any other public and private institutions.
TJIC's focus on SRI was the subject of our One Question Grant Proposal.
