Anticipated Schedule for New NHS Inductees
by Doug Cullen - Monday, September 14, 2009, 09:24 PM

Interested in being an NHS member?

Keep these requirements and dates in mind.

We are getting a list of academically qualified students soon and will mail invitations to attend an interest meeting on Friday, September 25th. We will distribute an interest packet at that time that contains a information form for recording your record of service and leadership, acknowledgment of commitment to ongoing service, character and academic standards and a request for consideration. Only current juniors and seniors may be considered for membership.

You will need to have 6 hours of service completed between the end of last school year and the submission date - Friday, October 9th. Use an official hours sheet to record your hours

DUE DATE - On Friday, October 9th you will need to submit your interest packet, which includes the information sheet and the 6 verifiable service hours. Both the hours form and the information sheet can be found on the "Information for Candidates" page, in the Public Area of this website. These must be turned into the NHS box near the main office by 4 PM on October 9th.

The Faculty council will then solicit comments from the entire faculty (including guidance) on the character and leadership qualities of all qualified students that met the service requirements and submitted their packet by the deadline. No consideration will be made for students lacking service hours or who fail to submit their packet on time.

The Faculty Council will use all the information from the student and faculty to select students to be inducted. Each student must receive a majority vote from the council to be selected. The Faculty Council will present its selections to Dr. Glazer for final approval.

Students that are approved will be notified of their selection and will receive an invitation to the required induction ceremony. Students must RSVP to the invitation and pay their dues prior to the ceremony.

The induction ceremony is generally held on a Thursday evening in the last week of October or First week of November. Inductees become Active members with participation in the Induction Ceremony. Student who miss the induction ceremony may be asked to resubmit their names for consideration the following year.

Criteria
  • The Challenger Chapter of the National Honor Society selects members based upon student's diligence in academics and outstanding performance in the areas of service, leadership, and character

In order to be considered for selection to The National Honor Society, you must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and complete 6 hours of community service before the application deadline in October. These hours may be completed in or out of school. The information and interest packet must also be completed and submitted by the deadline. After induction, you must complete 24 additional service hours each year, due by April. At least 6 of your 24 annual hours must be completed out of school.

Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or a higher cumulative average set by the Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. Students of good character have resolved all outstanding financial obligations.
