2005-2006 Team A Biographies:
Coach Lisa Lyle Wu currently teaches marine biology and is the lab director for the oceanography/geophysical systems lab at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. As a freelance science writer she has developed curricular materials for Discovery Channel and worked on exhibit development for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. She was a volunteer diver at the National Aquarium in Baltimore for ten years and served as Teacher at Sea for NOAA. Each year she takes students to study in, on, or under the sea surrounding the Bahamas, Florida Keys, or Galapagos Islands.
Wil Kilpatrick, a seasoned veteran of the NOSB and senior at TJHSST, reigns as taskmaster…er, captain of the ragamuffins mentioned below, as well as being the president (and webmaster) of the club. Invested with the awesome power of the team mascot, the ‘C-Monkey,’ Wil doesn’t simply survive the competition, he thrives in it – and occasionally finds it actually enjoyable. Proud of his Scottish heritage and Seattleite background, the coast has always played a large part in Wil’s life. Besides oceanology and the sciences (such as chemistry, astronomy, and video games), particularly appealing to Wil are languages, world history, and mythology.
Avi Baehr is a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School, and this is her first time participating in Ocean Bowl. She was drawn to the competition by her love for biology, beaches, and, of course, Finding Nemo. In her free time, Avi enjoys music, movies, and draining her savings at Starbucks - through years of trial and error, she has discovered that life is best enjoyed while caffeinated. Avi is excited to be back in California, which is her birth state, and she hopes to return to the state for college.
Seth Waddell is one of two TJHSST juniors this year in NOSB. He’s enjoying being a junior (as best he can) but is looking forward to being a senior and having all the perks that go with the title. He enjoys travel, and has been to exotic locations like the Galapagos Islands and Germany, to name a few. His hobbies include fencing, French horn, marching band, and swing dance. He also has a penchant for dueling, so offend his honor, but only if you dare. He aspires to join Swing Dance Team and to usurp the NOSB captaincy next year.
Helen Zhang is a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and a first-time NOSB participant. She was born in Maryland and is of Chinese descent. She has an older sister, Linda, who is currently attending college. At school, her favorite subjects include biology, mathematics, and chemistry. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, watching movies with ridiculously predictable and happy endings, daydreaming, and, of course, doing math problems. In the future, Helen hopes to gain superpowers, as well as grow taller than all those who enjoy constantly teasing her about her short stature.
Zack Yang is a Biology Olympiad National Semifinalist, founder of his school's humor magazine, and nationally-ranked French speaker. He has had extensive work with molecular biology, completing an 8-week internship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Zack also recently qualified to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. As an ex-cult member of the Jefferson It's Academic Team and former nationally-ranked Quake player, Zack Yang possesses lightning reflexes and a tendency to yell "First blood!" and "Multi-kill!" at any provocation. In his free time, he rests his nerves and sleeps. This is his first year at NOSB.
