Katrina Relief
Penny Wars to raise relief funds
In our efforts to fund raise for Katrina relief, the Red Cross Youth Task Force has implemented Penny Wars at TJHSST. For those who do not know, Penny Wars is a competition between classes. To gain points students can drop pennies into their class's designated locker, and to subtract points from other classes, students can place other denominations into other classes' lockers (ie. nickels, quarters, ones, tens, twenties, etc). One penny = 1 point. One dollar = -100 points. Penny Wars will take place during homecoming week, although due to school rules, the results will not count towards homecoming competition points. All proceedings will go to Katrina relief. The numbers of the four consecutive lockers will be announced at a later date. *Hint - All classes end up with large negative numbers; dropping quarters and bills into other classes' lockers is much more effective.
About
"Together we can save a life."
The Red Cross is an international organization dedicated to helping people around the world. As a small chapter of this organization, we have a responsibility to uphold their values and actively participate in worldwide efforts to alleviate plight. The Nation Capital Area of the American Red Cross works primarily to prepare for, respond to, and prevent disasters. The most common disaster for the area chapter is fire, and the chapter responds to more than 2 fires a day in Fairfax County alone. The Youth Task Force of the Fairfaxarea works to spread the Red Cross message and to encourage youth volunteering and leadership in the community. The YTF club at TJHSST works primarily by volunteering at the Sleepy Hollow Nursing Home as well as certain community projects throughout the year.
