What is it?

Techstravaganza is a science carnival. Its goal is to allow students to experience the fields of science, technology, math, and engineering. It is intended for elementary and middle school girls, although everyone is welcome. Students will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on science experiments as well as witness demonstrations and speak to scientists. The scientists are a source of information on future careers, what it’s like in their field and how they got there.

When is it?

Saturday, March 28th, 2008, from 1 to 4:00 PM

Where is it?

It is held at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at 6560 Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22312

Is there an admissions fee?

No, Techstravaganza is completely free to all.

Who are the sponsors of Techstravaganza?

The event is planned by three student groups: TWIST (Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology), WISE (Women in Science and Engineering)

Why is it important?

In recent years, fewer girls have been interested in science and technology related careers. We hope that this event will spark an interest in science for girls who may not be interested in it otherwise because they believe it to be boring, difficult, or only for boys. We hope that some of the girls who attend Techstravaganza will go on to take advanced science, math, and technology courses or apply to TJ and won’t let stereotypes stop them. A smaller proportion of girls are applying to TJ, therefore we are specifically focusing on areas surrounding TJ but target all of Fairfax County elementary and middle schools.
