Techstravaganza FAQ
What is it?
Techstravaganza is a science, technology, math, and engineering exploration day. It is intended for elementary and middle school girls and their parents, although everyone is welcome. Students will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on science experiments as well as witness demonstrations and speak to scientists. The scientists are a valuable source of information on future careers, opportunities in their field, and how they arrived at their positions.
When is it?
Saturday, April 19, 2008, from 1 – 4:30 PM.
Where is it?
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, located at 6560 Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA.
Is there an admissions fee?
No, admission to Techstravaganza is entirely free to all. No pre-registration is necessary.
Who is sponsoring Techstravaganza?
This event is sponsered by TWIST (Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology). Two other groups at Thomas Jefferson, WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) and GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) help to create labs for Techstrav. We also are supported by companies such as WIT (Women in Technology) and ExxonMobil.
Why is it important?
In recent years, fewer girls have been interested in science and technology careers. We hope that this event will spark an interest in science for girls who may not be otherwise interested because they believe it to be boring, difficult, or only for boys. We hope that some of the girls who attend Techstravaganza will go on to take advanced science, math and technology courses or apply to Thomas Jefferson and won’t be dissuaded by stereotypes. Since a smaller proportion of girls apply to TJ, we target all of Fairfax County elementary and middle schools, with a specific focus on the areas surrounding TJ.
