Topic B: Diamond Mining Crisis in the Congo

Background Guide

Jitsu Marupudi

Chair

Dear Delegates, Starting off, I would like to welcome you to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at TECHMUN XXXII. My name is Jitsu Marupudi and along with my friend Rishi, we are going to be chairing your committee. While this is only my second year doing Model UN, I’ve come to enjoy every moment of it. From losing my bloc (they said they were in the bathroom) to getting golden gavelled, I have been through it all. As someone who hasn't done MUN for a while, I certainly understand the challenges of not knowing your way through committee. Whether MUN is new for you or not, just know that you are not alone.

Outside of MUN, I enjoy watching, playing, and coaching sports. I am an avid Arsenal, Chiefs, and a Texas Longhorns fan(all of them being the second best team this year 😔) and believe that Taco Bell is the best fast food (debate me on this). On the weekends you can see me playing basketball or rotting in bed watching political thrillers.

Throughout the conference, I am looking for delegates who can perform not only on a middle school level but on a High School level as well. I want to see diplomacy in unmods, fun and informative speeches, and most importantly a committee dynamic that shows maturity beyond one's age. The phrase I want to echo throughout your time in UNHCR is “diplomacy and responsibility.” While this may sound serious, I just want everyone to enjoy this committee and have fun, regardless of award or outcome. Best of Luck!

Don’t forget to submit your position paper to us for awards. If you have any questions, feel free to email unhrctechmun2025@gmail.com.

Rishi Pathuri

Chair

Hey everyone! My name is Rishi Pathuri, and I’ll be chairing the UNHCR alongside my friend Jitsu Marupudi. I’m a junior at TJ, and this is my second year doing MUN. Over the past two years, I’ve had some of my most unforgettable experiences in MUN. From having encounters with law enforcement to rounding up the entire committee into one block, TJ MUN has taken me through the highs and lows of Model United Nations. With this, I am excited to be chairing UNHCR and can’t wait to see all of you in April.

In this committee, we’ll be discussing two critical global issues: diamond mining and exploitation in the Congo and human trafficking in third-world countries. These are topics that affect millions of people throughout the world, so we encourage you guys to step out of your comfort zone and come up with creative and unique solutions. I want you to think like a diplomat and really embrace the principles that the United Nations was founded upon. Something that I value in a delegate is diplomacy. Whether that is being nice to someone in your block or bringing Taco Bell to the chairs (hint: no beef), we encourage you to take the initiative and help someone struggling out.

Outside of MUN, you’ll probably find me playing Madden, watching F1, or playing basketball. Academically, I love exploring the uses of AI in computer science. In committee, my goal is to make sure you all have an interesting and fun experience. Whether this is your first time or you're a seasoned veteran, we want you to try your best, be diplomatic, and have fun! If you have any questions, send us an email at unhrctechmun2025@gmail.com. We can't wait to meet you all!
