TJHSST Public Forum

"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."
Joseph Joubert

What is Public Forum?

Public Forum debate is a form of current events debate predominantly in high school debate in the US. Debaters give short speeches interspersed with "crossfires", time set for questions and answers between opposed debaters. The debate centers around affirming or negating a topic or resolution, usually a proposal of a potential solution to a current events issue. A nonpartial judge determines the winner by casting a ballot.

The TJHSST Public Forum Debate team competes in PF competitions across the nation, and prepares debaters at all levels of Public Forum. Additionally, we host tournaments for both middle school and high schoolers debaters to grow the debate community.

Why Public Forum?

PUBLIC SPEAKING
Public Forum is designed to be accessible to the average citizen, meaning that speeches are understandable to the average non-debating person. Debaters leave with honed public speaking skills applicable wherever they may go.

CURRENT EVENTS
Public Forum covers a vast expanse of interests important in the modern world. Topics are unique in ranging from current events, to domestic/foreign policy, and traditional On balance debates. Debaters learn how to grasp both sides of important topics and see both sides.

ACCLAIM
Public Forum students at TJ debate in many circuits, from VHSL to the National Catholic Forensic League and the National circuit, and demonstrate their skills at national championships. Debaters win awards in the largest high school debate format.
