WISE: Girls helping girls succeed.
WISE is an organization founded by TJ students to provide mentorship opportunities for girls at Weyanoke Elementary School. The select group of about twenty girls from Weyanoke visit TJ twice a month to investigate exciting experiments with their TJ mentors. During these activities, mentors discuss and interpret scientific labs with their Weyanoke buddies. The process of mentorship helps to build the girls' confidence and promotes the pursuit of more challenging classes and potential careers in science and engineering.
Lab activities take place from 2:00 to 3:00 every other Friday during A-block of 8th period. Each Weyanoke participant is paired with two TJ mentors to ensure that at least one TJ student will be present for each lab. TJ mentors are encouraged to research and design experiments for the Friday meetings. Lab activities include experiments in biology, chemistry, physics, technology and engineering. To learn more about these experiments, please visit the Labs page.
